Clean energy runs on biomass.

Shipping, aviation, steel, gas and power are all turning to bioenergy to cut carbon. Every one of them needs feedstock it can trust.

India leaves about 250 Mt of crop residue over every year, out of about 750 Mt grown. Its biogas plants run 20 to 60% full, against above 80% in Europe. The gap is feedstock. Around 46 Mt of durable carbon removal is already contracted worldwide, and BECCS and biochar lead it.

Plants run 365 days a year. Harvest lasts 45. Straw comes off the field in a rush, then stops. A plant needs it every single day. Without mapping, baling and dry storage, it sits idle for ten months. The IEA says the world needs another 125 Mt of feedstock by 2030.

Every industry wants its own spec. Steel: charcoal is coming back to the furnace, as biochar made to steelmaking spec. Aviation: the next flight starts in a field, with fully traced residue. Shipping: the oceans are switching fuel, to bio-methanol made from port-scale biomass. Power: power stations are learning to burn crops, as dry, dense agro pellets. Gas: cities are running on biogas, fed by daily contracted tonnes of screened straw.

One harvest, many engines. Bio-methanol for shipping, SAF feedstock for aviation, steel-grade biochar, biogas straw and power pellets. Burn it for energy, or lock the carbon away: biochar holds carbon in soil or concrete for centuries, and BECCS takes it underground.

The deadlines are already set. EU carbon border rules for steel are live. India requires 5% biomass co-firing in coal plants and is ramping biogas blending from 1% in FY26 to 5% by FY29. The EU requires 2% sustainable aviation fuel in 2025 and 6% by 2030, and India plans 1% in 2027. FuelEU Maritime is live, and the IMO net-zero vote is due on 4 December 2026.

From India's fields to the world's ports. India grows more residue than it can use: about 250 Mt a year is surplus, a third of what it grows. Europe, East Asia and the Gulf are writing the rules and building the plants that need it. As pellets, char and methanol, it leaves India as an export, and India becomes a fuel supplier to the world.
